All 297 volumes of the royal protocols called “Uigwe” from Oegyujanggak, which was the royal library and archive of the Joseon Dynasty, have been returned home to Korea after 145 years.
In 1866, the royal books were plundered by the French Army during Byeongin Yangyo, which was the French military campaign against Korea. Since then, the whereabouts of these palace documents had long remained unknown until Korean bibliographer Dr. Park Byeong-seon discovered the books in 1975. After moving to study in France in 1955, she was working as a librarian at the National Library of France while searching for the royal documents. She visited almost every library and old bookstore in France to find the royal protocols.
Dr. Park Byeong-seon devoted her entire life to finding these traces of our lost history.
She is now deceased, but her spirit remains in Korean history, reminding people of an important unfinished task.

2011년, 외규장각 의궤 297책이 145년 만에 고국의 품으로 돌아왔다.
외규장각 의궤는 1866년 흥선대원군의 천주교 탄압에 의해 발발한 병인양요 당시 프랑스군에 의해 약탈당했다가 그 후 존재와 행방여부가 불투명한 상태였다.
그러던 와중에 1975년, 의궤의 행방을 찾아낸 이가 있었으니 재불역사학자 박병선 박사다.
1955년 프랑스로 유학을 떠난 그녀는 프랑스국립도서관 사서로 일하면서 줄곧 의궤의 행방을 찾아다녔다. 프랑스 전역의 도서관을 뒤지는 것은 물론 프랑스 고서점들까지, 그녀는 의궤를 찾는데 온 힘을 쏟았다.

잃어버렸던 역사를 찾아 평생을 헌신했던 박병선 박사.
그녀는 여전히 우리에게 미완의 숙제를 남겼다.
내가 의궤라면 울면서 돌아왔을 겁니다.
