This is the story of one Korean photographer’s amazing journey in the planet’s Far North to hunt the elusive, stunningly beautiful Aurora Borealis.
Astro-photographer Kwon O-Chul, the main character of the program and a member of the world-famous TWAN (The-World-At-Night) recently spent a few months chasing the Aurora Borealis. After staying up all night daily in frigid temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius, the team recorded the beautiful time-lapse images of multicolored curtains of light filling the skies in a way few have ever seen before.
In the program, the photographer pursues a life-long dream to track down the Aurora Borealis, “the true wonder of the world,” as he puts it. 태양 표면의 흑점 폭발 활동은 11년을 주기로 활성화되고 22년을 주기로 전자기적 에너지가 최고조에 달하게 된다. 올해 2013년엔 이 두 주기가 겹치면서 전례 없이 강력한 우주폭풍이 발생하고 있다. 태양 흑점 폭발 후 이틀 만에 지구에 도착하는 우주폭풍은 극지방에 북극광(오로라)이라는 경이로운 장관을 연출한다. 오로라는 실존하는 자연 현상임에도 불구하고 우리들은 이를 마치 유토피아와 같은 존재로 생각한다. 오로라가 발생하는 곳까지 가보는 것은 사실 불가능한 일이 아니다. 많은 사람들이 이 아름다운 천문 현상을 찾아 먼 길을 떠나고 있다.
여기 오로라로 인해 인생을 재출발하게 된 사람이 있다. 세계에서도 인정받는 천체사진가 권오철은 오로라를 처음 만난 후 삶의 방향을 다시 잡았다. 그와 함께 캐나다 북부, 노르웨이, 아이슬란드로 오로라를 찾아 떠난다. 또 가장 척박한 땅인 러시아 야말반도의 유목민과 오로라를 찾아 떠나는 한국인들의 희망찬 오로라 탐사 현장을 향해 꿈의 여로를 떠난다.
